America 250 Is Here — And Connecticut Has You Covered
July 4, 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence — and Connecticut is celebrating all year long. Whether you're looking to explore local history, take a day trip, or get your kids excited about the nation's founding, there's something happening across the state. The Connecticut Office of Tourism has set up a dedicated hub at ctvisit.com/ct250 where you can find events, exhibits, inspiration, and curated guides for marking this milestone — no matter where you are in the state.

250 In the Valley
So far, Naugatuck is the Valley town leading the way with dedicated America 250 programming.
Naugatuck Historical Society has built a rich America 250 Learning Resources page as part of the national commemoration. Organized around the official America 250 themes — founding ideals, everyday lives, struggles for freedom, innovation and industry, conflict and memory, and America in a global context — the page connects Naugatuck's local history to the broader national story. Resources include virtual exhibits from the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History, Ken Burns documentary series, Library of Congress oral histories, Smithsonian online exhibitions, and much more. It's a treasure trove for curious readers of all ages.
The Naugatuck History Museum is located at 380 Church Street and is open Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM.
To see a full list of Valley events that we have collected so far, you can go to America 250, Valley Edition.
Are other events or programs planned in Derby, Shelton, Ansonia, Seymour, or other Valley towns? We'd love to hear about them — send us a tip.
Field Trips: America 250 Beyond the Valley
Connecticut communities near and far are marking the anniversary with everything from formal commissions to multi-day festivals. Here are some worth a visit.
New Haven
New Haven has gone all-in, with a dedicated America 250 Commission organized under the city's Arts, Culture & Tourism department. Under the banner "Out of Many, One," the commission has been running a packed calendar of events including lectures, oral history workshops, community conversations, and film screenings throughout 2026.
Ongoing exhibits worth the trip include Unfurling the Flag: Reflections on American Patriotism at the Beinecke Library (through September 27), which features an original Declaration of Independence, and New Haven's Unfinished Revolutions, a new permanent installation at the New Haven Museum. The city has announced more than 60 planned events in total this year. See the full calendar and event list.
Hartford
Hartford is hosting Long Weekend Hartford, a five-day, city-wide festival of culture, history, art, and conversation running July 1–5, right around the Fourth of July. It's shaping up to be one of the signature America 250 events in the state. Learn more and plan your trip at longweekendhartford.com.
Milford
Milford has embraced the anniversary with a "Small City. Big Heart. Revolutionary Spirit!" approach. The city's Semiquincentennial Anniversary Celebration Committee has aligned its programming with four statewide themes: telling inclusive stories, the power of place, doing history, and civic engagement for the common good. Events include educational programs and historical commemorations throughout the year, with a signature event still to be announced. Milford was founded in 1639 — 137 years before the Declaration — so they've got plenty of local history to draw on. See Milford's America 250 page for updates.
Curated Guides from CTvisit
The state tourism site has put together some great topic-specific guides worth bookmarking:
For families with kids: 10 Fun Ways to Celebrate America's 250th With Kids — workshops, exhibits, re-enactments, and interactive experiences at sites around Connecticut that bring history to life for the next generation.
For outdoor enthusiasts: Trails to Take You Around Connecticut for America's 250th — a guide to noteworthy trails that connect to Connecticut's role in the American Revolution, African-American history, and historically significant state parks and forests.
Both guides are a great starting point for planning a summer outing that's both fun and meaningful.
