MJA Behavioral Health & Wellness: A Full-Spectrum Approach to Mental Health in the Valley
MJA Behavioral Health and Wellness began the same way many essential community services do: by responding to a need that wouldn’t stop showing up.
Founder and clinician Cassandra started the practice after going out on her own and quickly realizing how many people were reaching out for support. Calls were coming in constantly. The workload was unsustainable for one person, and the need was clearly bigger than a solo practice. What started as a small, family-centered operation grew steadily—first by bringing on another clinician, then another, and eventually becoming the multi-location practice it is today.
The name MJA comes from Cassandra’s children, their first initials and middle name, grounding the practice from the beginning in the idea of family and care. That philosophy still shapes everything they do.
Growing With the Community
MJA’s flagship location has always been in Shelton, beginning in a small office space before expanding into its current home at 2 Corporate Drive. The practice now occupies both the ninth and sixth floors of the building, with sweeping views and abundant natural light, an environment that feels intentional, calm, and welcoming.
In December, MJA expanded again, opening a new location in Fairfield. With each move, the goal stayed the same: serve more people without losing the feeling of being one connected practice.
The ninth floor is home to many of the clinicians, while the sixth floor supports group offerings and wellness services. These include massage, reiki, and acupuncture, which are services that are open to anyone, not just therapy clients. The idea is simple but powerful: mental health and wellness don’t exist in silos, and care works best when it’s holistic.
Therapy, Wellness, and Access
MJA works with children (generally age seven and up), adolescents, adults, families, and groups. They provide individual therapy, family therapy, group support, medication management, and wellness services, all under one roof. Clients can engage in one service or several, depending on their needs.
Importantly, the practice accepts a wide range of insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, something that remains a barrier at many mental health practices. They also work with Anthem, Cigna, Aetna, Tricare, and various UnitedHealthcare plans, and they offer financial assistance for clients with high deductibles or limited coverage.
The goal is access. MJA is intentional about not turning people away simply because of cost.
Another key part of that accessibility is their internship program. MJA hosts interns from programs such as Sacred Heart University, Fairfield University, and the University of Bridgeport. Interns are supervised, supported, and integrated into the practice. Many stay on as clinicians after graduation. The team is clear that “intern” does not mean inexperienced. Many come with years of related experience and current training, often bringing the most up-to-date research and approaches into their work.
A Thoughtful Intake Process
One of the most consistent pieces of feedback MJA receives is about their intake process, and it starts with something surprisingly rare: they answer the phone.
Whether someone reaches out by phone, email, or text, the practice responds within 24 hours. The intake team takes time with each person, understanding their situation and helping match them with a clinician who feels like the right fit. Often, people leave that first interaction with an appointment already scheduled.
Clients are also encouraged to explore clinician profiles on the website, where each provider lists areas of focus and populations they work with. The team is not separated by location online, reinforcing the idea that finding the right clinician matters more than which office you walk into. Telehealth is also available for those who prefer or need it.
Mental Health as a Community Priority
Mental health continues to emerge as a major concern across the Valley, including in the most recent Valley Community Index Report. Needs span all age groups from children and adolescents to seniors, and access to care remains critical.
Practices like MJA Behavioral Health & Wellness play an essential role in meeting that need. By combining therapy, wellness services, insurance accessibility, and a deeply human intake process, they provide care that is both professional and personal.
For Valley residents looking for mental health support or a more comprehensive wellness journey, MJA is a local resource built to grow alongside the community it serves.
